Overview

A theater, recalibrated

The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater opened in 2006 as part of Griffith Observatory's major expansion, serving as the venue for lectures, films, and signature public programs including All Space Considered. By 2024, its original audiovisual systems had reached obsolescence, and the Griffith Observatory Foundation engaged Landmark PM and theater designer TheatreDNA to lead a comprehensive renovation that would carry the venue forward for the next generation of programming.

The scope included replacement of the projection, sound, and control systems with networked digital infrastructure, new interior finishes and seating, a new masking system, and code upgrades throughout. Acoustic refinements, lighting upgrades, and accessibility improvements rounded out the work. The renovation was designed to support Griffith's full range of programming, from intimate lectures to live and streaming events, while remaining straightforward for Observatory staff to operate day to day.

Working on an active site within one of Los Angeles's most beloved civic landmarks meant tight coordination across vendors, the Foundation, and Observatory staff to protect the visitor experience throughout construction. The renovated theater reopened in 2024 as a cutting-edge audiovisual environment within an intimate 200-seat venue, ready to deliver Griffith's mission of making science and space exploration accessible to a wider audience.
